Crankworx 2024 – Whistler
Each year, Whistler village takes on a new identity. For a week, the hill is transformed into Crankworx, a celebration of everything mountain bike. From the numerous competitions to movie nights on the big screen, photography and videography awards, Crankworx has it covered. Starting with the Canadian Open downhill race, the week is filled with dual slalom, speed and style, Garbanzo and Air Downhill races (the unofficial Whip Offs, are included here), the Canadian Open enduro race and the finale, Slopestype. If you like riding bikes, or seeing people ride bikes really fast, or do big jumps and big tricks – this is where you need to be.
The quick run down for Cranworx Whistler.
Who: The top slopestyle, freestyle and freerider mountain bike riders are in attendance, many of them are participating in the full Crankworx series. Some of the top riders in downhill and enduro mountain bike can also make their way on to entry lists, riders like Ronan Dunne and Danny Hart raced in 2024.
What: Crankworx Whistler is part of the Crankworx global series, some riders will enter all of them, some only one. Top male and female rider at the end of the series are named King and Queen of Crankworx and a nice bonus cheque.
Where: All events are in Whistler bike park / village. The Canadian open track is not on the main village side, plan for that if you are on bike or foot. The chairlift is likely not available during the event. Dirt Diaries and Deep Summer competitions are in the village in the evenings, make sure to get an aussie pie, from the pie place. Accommodations will be pricey and possibly hard to find, car camping works but also be aware of bears, seriously.
When: Crankworx is in mid July but exact date depends on the year, check for that later in the spring.
Why: If you ride mountain bikes, this really is the place to go and its Crankworx. Everyone is there for bikes, the events are free to attend and they are all pretty amazing. Lift lines are a bit shorter if you are there on weekdays – some trails might be closed for events. Also a good time to try out a new bike, lots of brands will have demo bike rides, keep on the look out for those when you are touring the village.
Editors note: Ronan Dunne crashed on his race run in the Canadian open DH, when he got to the top of the rock garden, he stopped to fire up the crowd, chug a beer and then gap out of the rock garden, pictured below!
